The guest room is a space for your family and friends to lay their sleepy head. So why is it the room that is often ignored or done last? Well lets face it, when your decorating your home, you often want to spend the time and money in rooms that you use on a daily basis and not in the rooms that may be used the least. However, it is important to make sure that your guests feel welcome and comfortable sleeping in your home.
There are lots of ideas online and in books about how to keep your guests comfortable and welcome, but really, I'm not convinced that you need to lay out a basket stuffed to the hills with loofahs and kettles, nor do you have to make it look like a hotel. You want them to "visit" with you, not hibernate in their room. It doesn't take a lot to create a beautiful guest room. Fresh paint, clean linens, fresh towels, a few flowers and hangers in the closet will make your guests feel comfortable and welcome.
The guest room is also an opportunity for you to step outside your "comfortable" decor. You may have a neutral palate in your house, so try using the guest room as your pop of colour or add a beautiful patterned curtain.

Sleep over!
I love the grey and yellow
These are photos of our two guest rooms from our previous home
We are almost finished our guest room. In our house, its called the "green room" (that isn't code for anything, its just the only room in the house that's painted green) or according to our big guy, its called "Nana and Poppa's" room.
This room was a selling feature for us in the house. Its a good size, rectangular room with a wall of windows in the addition. Its a beautiful room to sit in during winter time as the snow sits on the large tree outside and lovely to wake up to in the summer with all the sunshine. However, its really been a room in the house that has had the slowest transformation as we have spent more money and effort in other areas.
I'm happy to say that it is close to being complete. Here are a few "before" pictures. The main part of the room had dirty and stained pinky/beige carpet and the walls were primary colour green. It definitely didn't say "welcome guests".
Remember my DIY desk? Its in the green room and my favourite new place to blog with a cup of tea.
See this armoire? It too was hanging out on someone's curb just waiting to be rescued. Mr. Fix-it painted it and he and his handyman Carlos nearly broke their back carrying it up the stairs. It is happy in its new home...the green room.
That's our guest room. Its not a hotel room, but its a cozy and fresh place for our guests to feel comfortable and have a good night's sleep. It doesn't take much to have a fresh.fabulous.sophisticated guest room that will keep your guests coming back.
Keep it Beautiful.
I love this Alicia! I am sending the link to my sister, as she and her bf recently bought a house and are trying to decide how to set up the guestroom. Thanks!
